Today I start preparing Keegan for respite. It’s not a spur-of-the-moment decision — it’s a process filled with love, planning, and detail.
When a parent of a child with a disability prepares for respite, it’s far more than packing clothes or toiletries. It’s creating care plans so others can truly understand your child — how to feed them, support personal care, manage medication, and follow their routines.
For me, that means writing plans for sleep, medication, nutrition, epilepsy, asthma, bowel care, exercise, sun protection, even haircut and nail care. Then there’s the documentation: specialist contacts, GP, local hospitals, Medicare and NDIS numbers, MyGov details, and daily routines from morning to night.
It’s a lot — but it’s what we do. Because no one knows our children like we do, and we want their care to be safe, consistent, and full of dignity.
To every parent preparing their child for respite — I see you. You are doing an extraordinary job, even when it feels like no one notices.
